"This is the proverbial there's something for everyone type of event. Let's start with the entertainment. You name it, they've got it. Classic rock, pop, country, swing, flamenco, folk, jazz, Latino, rhythm and blues, Zydeco and even Polynesian music…dance groups add to the mix…a battle of the bands…magicians, clowns, mimes, circus performers and ventriloquists…a dozen participatory arts sites provide kids of all ages the chance to create New Year's souvenirs such as hats, masks, bracelets, necklaces, kaleidoscopes, noisemakers, magic lanterns, buttons, crowns and other art works…local artists will demonstrate their techniques, as will face-painters, temporary tattoo artists and balloon sculptors…and I haven't even mentioned the fireworks displays at 8 p.m. and midnight."

"A concert by just one of these acts is comparable to the admission they are asking for an evening packed with music of every genre, dance performances and fireworks thrown in for good measure."
- Marcia Manna, Union Tribune, 12/26/02
"The streets were covered with milling, laughing crowds who wore colorful hats, dragging children with painted faces and ate food off paper plates. Old and young roamed the streets, Escondido City Hall and the California Center for the Arts, to sample music from 38 bands playing on 13 stages."

"If there was a better New Year's Eve party in San Diego County than First Night®, I want an invitation next year…Grand Avenue was a continuing swarm of activity, with music, magicians and acrobatics on six stages, other performers entertaining up and down the street, long lines at the inflatable bungee runs and obstacle course, and participatory arts tent filled with youngsters making crowns, masks, bracelets, hats and many other projects…This was big-league entertainment for a small-time price."
